2mm hardboard and MDF: stocks down, prices up
The framing trade is suffering from a severe shortage of 2mm hardboard and MDF, and is facing rapidly rising prices for both products. Both are staple supplies that are commonly used as back board, especially in the volume and budget sectors.
Specialist retail framers are increasingly turning to the expanding range of lightweight conservation quality alternatives to hardboard and MDF, but the higher price of these is presenting the price-driven volume sector with a major headache.
UK framing suppliers are being asked to pay more for their board and this price increase is being passed on to customers. Leading supplier Wessex Pictures predicts price rises of 50 per cent by the end of the year. Only if framers are prepared to pay more for their board, will it be worth manufacturers' while to continue to supply the framing industry.
