Wessex Pictures Oldham “A Grand Day Out”!!!

WESSEX PICTURES in Oldham have recently doubled the size of their showroom area, in response to increases in their trade counter business.  Northern area manager for WESSEX - Steve Goodall comments “I joined the WESSEX group in September of last year & it has been one of my prime aims to create good reasons for people to actually visit our depots”.  “The new 2013 WESSEX Catalogue is huge & very comprehensive, but it is a totally different thing to touching & assessing sample mouldings in the flesh, or accurately assessing the true colour of a specific mountboard”.

If you didn’t make it to Spring Fair this year you can now see the full range of over 1,300 WESSEX mouldings on display & choose your samples to take away.  All the mouldings are conveniently arranged in groups, so if you have a vague idea of what you want, it is easy to way up all the options & then choose the right products.  New mouldings are also arranged together so you can see “what’s new” at a glance & a handy “top 150” section is invaluable for newer framers who may need some help in setting up with a fast moving selection of samples.

It’s not just all about mouldings though, WESSEX Oldham carries a massive range of mountboard from manufacturers such as DALER ROWNEY, ARQADIA, NIELSON BAINBRIDGE, CRESCENT & their own very competitively priced WESSEX “Value Range” of boards.  All boards are available in single sheets, which is very handy if you are looking for something that is a “little different” & you may not want a full pack.  A full range of sundries is another popular reason for customers to call in.  From picture cord to glass cleaner & from wedges to packing materials, Wessex Oldham stock a complete range to take away.

But the “Jewel in the Crown” of WESSEX Oldham is probably their stock & product knowledge of specialist glass.  Glass specialist Jean Roberts explains, “We carry a huge range of specialist glass products & it can be a bit bewildering to a newcomer, so we spend a good amount of time in helping framers choose the right product for their job”.  “We have wall displays of all the different types & free sample frames for customers to display in their own shops & galleries”.  “These sample frames are a real selling aid for any framer as they show the man in the street just how good their work could look with the right type of glass”.

WESSEX Oldham also offers a very fast & efficient glass cutting service, on both plain glass & speciality glass & plastics.  The cutting team have years of experience & are experienced in handling even the most challenging of jobs. Customers can usually phone ahead & pop in to collect their cut glass order the same day if they want to.  Glass can be difficult to transport though & this is where the WESSEX fleet of delivery vans come into play.  Delivering to most areas around the Greater Manchester area up to 3 times a week & most other areas in their region on a twice weekly basis the Oldham crew of 5 drivers & their vans offer an exceptional service.  With a dedicated delivery service even single sheets of mountboard & individual lengths of moulding can be transported safer than on a courier service.

Branch manager, Ken Turner, has spearheaded the trade counter upgrade & was keen to listen to what existing customers had to say. “The free parking at Oldham, right by the door & in our own private car park was something customers loved”.  “With this in mind we have extended the designated customer parking facility with signs & marked customer bays”.  “Customers can spend as much time as they like browsing our products or enjoying a coffee & a chat, whilst our warehouse team pick, pack & even load the customer’s order for them”.

Oldham team

The Oldham team are all local folk & you can be sure of a very warm “Northern Welcome”.  The kettle is always on and coffee & biscuits are never far away.  Memorabilia specialists AUTOGRAPH ARTS Dave & Wayne admit that “we find any excuse to leave the football shirts behind for an hour to pop into the depot for a few bits & a cuppa”.  “New products are coming in all the time & the team are always quick to keep us up to date on everything”.

Located just 6 miles from Manchester city centre & only 500 yards from Junction 22 of the M60 Manchester ring road, WESSEX Oldham could not be easier to reach.  It may not be the prettiest part of town, but it very easy to get to from any of the 10 local towns that make up the Greater Manchester area.

Robin Sharples of MILL TOWN GALLERY agrees & says “though I use the WESSEX van delivery service regularly, I still like to jump in my Land Rover & pop down to the branch”.  “It gets me out of the gallery, for a break & though I am based almost 20 miles away in Rawtenstall, it still only takes me around 25 minutes to get to the branch, as WESSEX is just off the motorway”.

Lauren Worsley is a popular voice on the phone at WESSEX Oldham, as she makes her weekly “phone around” calls for the five Oldham based vans.  Lauren says “it is really nice to actually put a face to someone you may speak to every week on the phone”.  “I am always pleased to meet the people I speak to & I have been letting all my regulars know about our new showroom”.  “Lots of people have admitted that they never thought of popping in for a browse & I am looking forward to a busy few months of getting to know them all better”.

The local regional branch of the Fine Art Trade Guild has struggled a little in the recent past & Wessex Oldham, who has staged guild events before, is now keenly working with local organiser, Anne Corless to revive their very popular “Hot Pot Supper” & “Curry Night” events, which proved a real winner with local guild members in the recent past.

WESSEX offer the complete range of LIBERON products for hand finishing & the WESSEX range of plain wood profiles is extensive, so putting the two together makes sense & a number of free training sessions are being planned for week days, evenings & weekends.  Steve Goodall explains, “all our customers are free at different times & we want to offer the most flexible training sessions, so as many people as possible can join in, whilst keeping individual class sizes low.  We think this will mean that everyone gets the most out of any given session”.

With HOT PRESS laminators & vacuum presses on display & with Steve’s extensive knowledge of the range, free mounting & laminating classes will also be an ongoing feature of the WESSEX Oldham programme of events.  Phil Derby of FOREVER FRAMES said “adding mounting & laminating to my list of framing services is a top priority for me & I will certainly be booking my place on a class”.

The WESSEX PICTURES Oldham showroom & trade counter is open from 8am to 5pm Monday to Friday & is located at…
